Sporty student Rachael wins race to be new face of Nike
A DUBLIN student has been chosen as the new face of Nike.
Rachael Kilgallen, who is a second year student at Dublin City University, will spend the year promoting sport to women in Ireland and Britain.
As part of the process, Rachael was flown to the company's London HQ where she was chosen as one of only 20 ambassadors for Nike from across the UK and Ireland.
"In January, I got an email from Nike saying they would be interested in me taking on the role and I was flown to London in February where I visited the company's headquarters. I was subsequently selected to fulfil the role for 2012," explained Rachael.
One of Rachael's jobs will be marketing the brand, which will see her enjoy regular trips to London as the city hosts the Olympics.
"I'm delighted as it's going to be particularly busy with various campaigns and, of course, it's Olympic year as well," she added.
Rachael, who is studying International Business with German and Spanish at DCU, is on a sports scholarship at the university.
One of her main ambassadorial roles for the sportswear company will be promoting the Nike running club at DCU.
The focus of the 2012 Nike Selects is to inspire young women to be active. It hopes to encourage more women to take up sport at university and within their local communities.
The Nike team searched universities across the UK and Ireland to pick women who they felt would be ambitious, confident and inspirational in promoting sporting participation to women at 16 universities.
"Nike is very interested in getting more women involved in running at recreational level," says Rachael, who is originally from Sligo.
This year, the Nike Selects will be encouraging students to take part in the Nike Training Club (NTC).
Inspired by the training of world-class athletes and developed by professional fitness trainers, NTC is specially designed to help athletes make themselves whatever they want to be.
The Nike Training Club has been started in various universities in Dublin but will be spreading nationwide in the near future.
