Spend €6k and wait for months or pay €13 for lookalike bag

THERE might be a 15-month waiting list to get your hands on the famous Hermes Birkin bag -- but you can pick up a replica for €13 straight off the shelf.

Despite the recession and tightening of purse strings, fashion followers are still queuing up to purchase the designer tote.

With a massive price tags starting from €6,000 to €30,000, the bag has shoppers remain willing to splash out a mouth-watering sum for the Hermes luxury item and are prepared to wait over one year to own a prized Birkin.

A source told the Herald that the Dublin boutique in Brown Thomas are not taking any more orders for the accessory until June.

Customers can expect to wait up to 10 months after putting their name on the list before their offering actually lands in store.

"Each bag is handmade and takes three days to make at the workshop in France and the craftsmanship is so intricate that people study for six years to perfect the skill," an insider said.

"A lot goes into making these, they're very special."

But for the rest of us who cannot afford to splurge on the accessory, Penneys' budget friendly lookalike costs only €13.

Launched in January, the bargain bag has similar detailing to the real thing. It comes in a range of colours, which include a royal blue tote with a silver pad lock, in black with a bronze padlock or a red option with a gold padlock.

For trend-conscious customers, Penneys have also stocked up on a contrast trim bag such as cream and green for spring.

The Birkin, named after actress Jane Birkin, has been a firm favourite with celebrities for years, including the likes of Victoria Beckham, Julia Roberts, Lady Gaga, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lindsay Lohan, Eva Longoria and Kim Kardashian.

Our own WAG Claudine Keane has been spotted wearing the hot hold-all, for which she shelled out a cool €6,300.

When the stylish mum-of-one touched down in Los Angeles last September, following footballer hubby Robbie's move to LA Galaxy, she made sure to show off her black leather arm candy in front of snappers.

And it seems the Assets model (27) has started building a collection -- she was spotted at Paris Fashion Week last month complete with a beige version at the Elie Saab runway show.
