Primary school teacher Orla Sweeney, from Donabate, began volunteering with a new Special Olympics club that opened in her area last year.

Through her work with athletes aged four to 12, she dec- ided to run the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon last year and raised nearly €300 for Special Olympics.

This year, the 25-year-old is taking part in the virtual event, which runs from October 1 to 10, to help support Special Olympics Ireland again.

"Things are a little bit diff- erent for us all this year, but the importance of the Special Olympics for athletes hasn't changed," Orla said.

Amazing

"They need our support more than ever to get the clubs back up and running.

"I'm taking part again this year in the Vhi Virtual Women's Mini Marathon to raise funds to ensure that Special Olympics can continue to support and celebrate its amazing ath- letes during these challenging times.

"I urge anyone thinking about taking part to join Team Special Olympics and help make sure there's a strong programme for the athletes to look forward in the future."
