Son held on way to airport after OAP smothered in bed

Ms Vollrath died at the nursing home at 1.30am yesterday. The elderly woman had been ill and family and friends had been keeping a vigil at her bedside.

The woman is believed to be a German national, who had been living in Tramore, Co Waterford, for several years.

It is understood that the arrested man, who lives in the Tramore area, had visited her at the home on Sunday night but had left some time before the woman's death was discovered.

He is understood to have had a chat with a relative who later spoke to gardai. When officers called to the nursing home the woman had already been certified as dead by a local doctor.

Her body had been removed to a local funeral home. Nursing home staff had removed the bed linen including pillows from the woman's bed. But gardai retrieved these items before they were cleaned at a laundry.

Gardai were alerted yesterday that the man -- who was not an employee of the nursing home -- was on his way to the airport and decided to arrest him. The victim's son was planning to get a flight to Frankfurt.

Staff and residents at the nursing home were interviewed by gardai as they tried to build up a picture of what had taken place in the previous 24 hours. Residents were said to have been shocked by the discovery of the woman's body in the home, which is near the woodlands of the Ballinamona estate.

Opened in 2004, Killure Bridge Nursing Home can accommodate 79 residents.
