Skerries Paddy's Day event is saved

ONE of Dublin's most popular St Patrick's Day parades is back on after locals rallied round to save it.

The Skerries parade had been doomed to cancellation at the last minute due to lack of support.

But now the Skerries Chamber of Commerce has drummed up enough backing from the local community and businesses to resurrect it.

The event had been in jeopardy because the chamber -- which organises the parade -- had been reduced to just a few members

But a spokesperson this week said the chamber had been able to secure local support as well as insurance.

Following intensive talks, it has also been boosted by support from the local Lough-shinny Motorcycle Club and Mayor of Fingal Ciaran Byrne.

Local schools, sporting and other community groups, who feared their preparations would be wasted, are now looking forward to taking part after all.

The organisers are calling on 40 volunteers to take on the job of stewarding, but said they would make up the numbers "by hook or by crook".

"It gives me great pleasure to announce that the St Patrick's Day Parade will now go ahead under the chamber banner," said President of the chamber, Fran Tobin.

Ms Tobin said of the steward numbers: "This will be the only thing that would stop the parade from going ahead, we have had a number of people coming forward but we need more."
