Shotgun seized as gardai raid house

Five men were arrested and a sawn-off shotgun and ammunition were recovered when gardai raided a house in west Dublin last night.

The raid happened at 9.45pm at a property in Fortlawn Park, Clonsilla. The five suspects remain in custody at a number of garda stations today.

The five arrested men -- all from the Fortlawn area -- are aged between 20 and 32.

The drama unfolded when gardai followed a car whose driver they suspected was drink driving.

The suspect and another man abandoned the car and fled into a house in Fortlawn Park, pursued by the gardai.

Inside officers discovered the sawn-off shotgun and two cartridges.

One of the suspects in custody previously survived a knife attack in the Fortlawn area.

Another -- a 24-year-old who was driving the car -- is from eastern Europe and has previous convictions for assaulting a garda.

A source said: "It would be wrong to say that these fellas are an organised criminal gang, but they are well known to gardai.

"It is significant that a firearm and ammunition has been seized."

The seizure of the shotgun is just the latest firearms incident in north Dublin.

In nearby Finglas, there were two armed carjackings within the space of 23 hours of each other this week.
