ONE of the country's busiest shopping centres had to be evacuated yesterday following an alert over a suspect package.

Hundreds of customers were forced to vacate the Ilac Centre on Dublin city's Henry Street at around 6pm after the package was reported outside the centre's River Island clothing store.

Five Garda vehicles and two units of Dublin Fire Brigade rushed to the scene where a large area of the street surrounding the store was cordoned off.

A large crowd gathered as firemen placed a hose outside the front doors as a precautionary measure while the examinations continued inside.

At around 6.45pm a number of people were seen leaving the upper floor of River Island and exiting through the front doors before the cordon had been removed.

A spokesperson from River Island could not be reached by the Herald last night.

Shortly before 7pm the package was declared a false alarm. A garda spokesman said that a package had been discovered but it was not deemed harmful.
