Black Friday lived up to its reputation as shoppers took to Dublin's shopping streets in their droves to snap up bargains a month before Christmas.

For Vanessa Stafford (37), it was well worth the train trip from her home in Mornington, Co Meath, to Henry Street.

Laden with bags from Debenhams, which had advertised up to 30pc off in all departments, she said she was pleasantly surprised when up to 50pc was taken off some things at the cash register.

"When we got to the till they said, 'Actually it's half price," said Vanessa.

"We got the kids a ton of clothes for Christmas from bluezoo - we got them leather jackets, all their Christmas coats and all their Christmas Day outfits, Christmas cards, half-price electric toothbrush, unicorns - which are the big thing this year. We have tons of stuff.

"We saved a fortune on the kids' clothes, and they're good quality."

With Vanessa were young fashionistas including daughter Emily (9), nieces Caoilin (11) and Clodagh (8) and son Elliot (4).

"This is the annual thing we do now every year," she said.

Diarmuid McCarthy (64), from Rathmore, Co Kerry, insisted he didn't mind being the shopping bag "mule" as his wife Sheila (52) went on a spree.

Asked how much she had spent, Diarmuid said: "I have no idea. What do I care, really?

"When she's doing her business for Christmas, as long as she's happy, I'm happy."

Sheila wouldn't reveal the damage to her credit cards, but she said she was delighted with some of the bargains to be had.

"Arnotts was fantastic and Boots," she said, adding that the crowds weren't as big as she had feared.

"Everybody was in great form, it was nice," she said.

Gretta Kelly (65), from Stoneybatter, said she was delighted at picking up some half-price bargains from Arnotts.
