A SENATOR who advertised for an Oireachtas secretary was left shocked when almost 120 people applied for the job.
Senator Jillian van Turnhout (inset) said she had sleepless nights as a result of the experience because she was forced to choose only one candidate from a large field of people more than qualified for the job.
The senator added that the experience was a sign of the times with people of all ages desperately seeking any job possible.
"I recently advertised a job for my assistant in the Seanad. I got 119 applications, now I know not many people advertise their jobs within the Oireachtas, but 119 applications.
"I had a sleepless night about who to employ. There were outstanding candidates out there for jobs."
