Sales up for grocers
THE three major grocers all increased their share over the Christmas period as customers upped their spending by 1pc in the three months to December.
According to figures from Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland, Tesco's sales grew by 3.6pc to 28pc, Dunnes reported a sales jump to 24pc while SuperValu maintained its recent positive performance with a 1.2pc rise, pushing its market share to 19.9pc.
However, Kantar points out growth rates remain significantly below the 3.4pc food inflation rate. German discounter Aldi continues to increase its market share at a dramatic rate up to 4.5pc. The only big player to lose market share is the Musgrave-owned Superquinn, dropping by 13pc to 5.4pc.
