One of the actors on Fair City celebrated his 60th birthday yesterday - on the same day that his character was seen dying of cancer.

Last night, viewers of the popular RTE soap saw Ronan, who is played by Peter Gowen, say an emotional goodbye as he passed away on the couch in the home of his lover, Dolores.

The UK-based actor has told how he was planning to watch his final scenes on the RTE Player as he had other matters to attend to yesterday.

Restaurant

Peter was spending the milestone day celebrating his birthday by having a gourmet meal in the upmarket London hotel, The Dorchester

"I still can't believe that I'm 60," he said.

"I'm trying to get my head around it. In my head, I'm still 25.

"My wife booked us to go to Alain Ducasse's restaurant in the Dorchester, which has three Michelin stars.

"We go there every year, I'm a big foodie.

"I'm a part-time chef when I'm not working so I'm really looking forward to it."

Peter's character first arrived in Carrigstown last September and was seen falling for Dolores, who is played by Martina Shanley, after meeting her in a hospital while they were both undergoing treatment for cancer.

However, while she recovered, Ronan's condition worsened this week and despite her husband's misgivings, he moved into her family home so to be near her during his final days.
