Research funds needed
THE EU has warned Ireland that it is not benefiting from the massive spending on research at universities.
Although Irish researchers are traditionally successful at winning EU funds for research, this is not reflected in the number of patents which emerge. Ireland has had the highest growth in the EU in hi-tech and knowledge-intensive employment, the report found, but it suggests that multinationals are licensing any inventions from their Irish-based enterprises in their home countries instead. The report, released by Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, said that Ireland needs to spend more money on research but the Government and private sector are struggling to find the funding.
