Rescue alert mum and kids are found safe

A MAJOR garda search for a mother and three children who were missing from their Roscommon home overnight has been called off after they were found safe and well.

The mother was pulled over by a PSNI patrol at the Lochside petrol station in the centre of Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh. shortly before 9am.

"She wasn't actually in here," said a member of staff at the Texaco garage on the Tempo Road.

"A police car was behind her and flashed the lights at her car and she pulled in here.

"Everything looked normal. There was no panic," the staff member added.

Another eye witness said: "The police officers were very calm.

"The mother got into the police car and the children were taken away in another police vehicle which arrived very quickly. It was over in a minute or two."

The mother has now been detained by the PSNI under the mental health act.

Supt David Taylor of the garda press office thanked the public for their assistance in the operation.

"While this is a difficult time for the family we are relieved that there has been a good outcome.

"We now want to give them the space and time to deal with the matter. We want to thank the public and the media for all their assistance overnight and this morning," he added.

OPERATION

The garda operation had been put in place at 9pm last night after neighbours raised the alarm when the family did not return to their home in a quiet village in Co Roscommon.

The family were last seen at 3pm yesterday when the mother picked up two of her children from a local school. The Child Rescue Ireland alert was implemented last night and saw a nationwide search for the family put in place.
