Hollywood star Nicole Kidman has said she and Reese Witherspoon are "friends for life" after working together on their new TV comedy-drama, Big Little Lies.

The actresses are the executive producers and stars of the HBO show about three mothers whose apparently perfect lives unravel to the point of murder.

Speaking at the premiere in Los Angeles, Kidman said her co-stars, who also include Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoe Kravitz, were no longer "just the people I work with".

"The strongest thing was standing on the red carpet with those five women, going, 'These are my friends'," she said. "They're not just the people I work with, they're my friends - for life."

Kidman was joined at the premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood by her husband, singer Keith Urban.

The Australian actress will be at the Bafta Awards in London on Sunday, where she is nominated for best supporting actress in the drama Lion.

Urban will not be attending because he is nominated for three Grammy Awards in LA on the same night.

"We're going to be on other sides of the planet," he said. "It's a conundrum because it's a huge honour for both of us."

Kidman said: "It's probably never going to happen again so we go, 'OK'.

Witherspoon, who attended the premiere with her 17-year-old daughter, Ava, said serving as a producer on Big Little Lies was unlikely to lead to her working as a director.

"I really like what I'm doing now," she said. "I like producing, I like acting, but I'm not inclined to direct."

Big Little Lies, based on the best-selling novel by Liane Moriarty, will be shown on Sky Atlantic in the UK next month.
