Red Cow chief and dad-of-7 Tom is Person of the Year

HOTELIER Tom Moran has been awarded the title Limerick Person of the Year by the Dublin branch of the Limerick GAA Supporters Club.

The father-of-seven, who is at the head of a chain of 10 hotels, received the honour in his own Red Cow Moran Hotel.

"Limerick has always been a great place to live, to grow up, to study, to do business, but now more than ever it is coming into its own," the Athea native said. "I am proud of my continued connection and involvement with the place of my birth, and even though the city has transformed itself since I lived there, the core values of strength, character, respect for hard work, family and community mean as much in the Limerick of today as they did when they formed my own approach to work and to life in the Limerick in which I grew up."

Diarmuid Grace, PRO of the Limerick Supporters Club in Dublin, said that Tom deserved "the award as reward for his promotion and support of Limerick and its sport over the past decades."

Tom is a former Limerick hurling sponsor. His Moran Hotels sponsored the Limerick GAA teams between 1998 and 2003, during which time the U21s hurling team won three consecutive All Irelands. He has been known to support the economy of his home county on other occasions. For example, all the hotels in the group use Limerick company, Ashgrove Meats, as their main meat supplier as well as Pallas Foods and Athea Painters.

The businessman, now in his 60s, started his career by becoming the youngest licensee in London, at just 19.

He worked as a pub manager for 10 years before returning to Ireland where he bought two pubs in Limerick.
