'Rats, the lot of you' - man as he's charged over horror stabbing
A Dublin man has appeared in court charged over a vicious stabbing attack on another man, which took place near Finglas Garda Station last Wednesday.
Martin Cunningham (24) shouted out "rats" toward the public gallery of Blanchardstown District Court as he was led away to custody.
He did not apply for bail on the charges and Judge David McHugh remanded Mr Cunningham in custody to appear before Cloverhill District Court next week.
The accused, of Warrenstown Drive, Mulhuddart, was brought before Blanchardstown District Court yesterday, charged with seriously assaulting a man at Liam Mellowes Road in Finglas on April 10.
Mr Cunningham is further charged with producing a machete during the course of the same incident.
Garda Sean Kelly gave evidence of arresting Mr Cunningham at 6.50am before he was charged by another officer.
Gda Kelly said the accused was handed a true copy of the charge sheets and he made no reply to the charges after caution.
Gda Kelly said there would be objections to bail.
However, defence solicitor Wayne Kenny said Mr Cunningham was not applying for bail at this stage anyway, and there was consent to a remand in custody.
The court heard that the DPP's directions remained outstanding in relation to the charges.
Judge McHugh remanded Mr Cunningham in custody for one week to appear before Cloverhill court next Tuesday.
The judge also assigned Mr Kenny on free legal aid.
Mr Cunningham has not yet indicated a plea to the charges.
As he was led away into custody, Mr Cunningham started shouting and making gestures at the public seated in the gallery of the courtroom.
He repeatedly shouted "rats" and "rats, the whole lot of you" as he was led away by gardai.
Gardai believe the alleged assault is linked to an ongoing feud in the Blanchardstown and Finglas areas of the northside.
Reference to the incident near Finglas Garda Station last Wednesday was made at another court hearing last week when a teenager appeared at Blanchardstown District Court in relation to a separate violent disorder offence.
During a bail application at that court hearing, evidence was given that a man was stabbed in the neck outside Finglas Garda Station.
