Rare gem with €4m price tag

Sotheby's will auction a rare, large blue diamond that was once part of the legendary De Beers Millennium collection, with fierce bidding expected on the $4.6m-$5.8m (€3.3m-€4.2m) estimate price.

The 5.16 carat, pear-shaped internally flawless Fancy Vivid Blue gem is the first diamond of its kind to appear at an auction from the collection that De Beers, the world's largest diamond producer, presented to celebrate the millennium. It is going on sale at Sotheby's Hong Kong jewels and jadeite on April 7.



Cheney heart care working

One of Dick Cheney's daughters said the former US vice president was recovering well from the mild heart attack that saw him taken to hospital last week.

Liz Cheney said her father is following doctor's orders. Dick Cheney, who is 69, has had five heart attacks -- the first when he was 37.



New avalanche survival airbags

A Swiss engineer used a resort near Alta, southeast of Salt Lake City, to show off a device meant for surviving a deadly snow slide.

It is a set of airbags designed into a backpack for floating on top of avalanche debris. Skiers hit a rip cord to activate the airbags.

Engineer Manuel Genswein said the $1,000 (€735) airbag system has proven 98pc effective in Europe.
