Quit before we expel you, Fianna Fail tells Bertie
BERTIE Ahern will next week be told he should quit Fianna Fail voluntarily following the damning findings of the Mahon Tribunal.
THE Herald has learned that party has written to the disgraced ex-Taoiseach telling him he has no place in Fianna Fail. It was sanctioned by Micheal Martin.
In the letter, party secretary Sean Dorgan gives Mr Ahern the opportunity to resign from Fianna Fail instead of being formally expelled next week.
Letters have also been sent to five other party figures investigated by the Mahon Tribunal, including ex-minister and former EU Commissioner Padraig 'Pee' Flynn. These include former Dublin North TD GV Wright and former councillor Finbar Hanrahan who all face expulsion.
Well-placed party figures told the Herald that any decision by Ahern to voluntarily walk would "prevent a backlash" from his supporters in Fianna Fail. Mr Ahern was told by a close aide this weekend that the letter has been sent, and he is expected to receive it on Monday.
Meanwhile the explosive Mahon report - which found that Mr Ahern lied about €275,000 in bank accounts -- has spelled the end of the iconic St Luke's headquarters.
The Herald can reveal that the Drumcondra-based office is being shut by Fianna Fail.
