Probe launched as man dies after being punched outside nightclub
A POST-mortem exam was expected to be conducted on the body of a man who died after he was punched in a random attack outside a nightclub.
James Tynan (25) was assaulted in Liberty Square in Thurles, Co Tipperary, at 1.30am on Sunday. He died in hospital last night.
It is believed a person he did not know ran towards him on the street outside a nightclub and punched him once in the face, knocking him to the ground, causing him severe head injuries.
Mr Tynan, from Johnstown in Co Kilkenny, was described as a "unassuming, well-liked man" and his family and girlfriend Fiona Morrissey are "devastated".
Mr Tynan had enjoyed a night out in Hayes's Hotel in Thurles before being attacked in Liberty Square after leaving in the early hours of Sunday.
A 22-year-old man, understood to be from Templemore, Co Tipperary, was last night released without charge after being questioned by gardai. A file will be sent to the DPP.
Today's post-mortem exam will form a vital part of the garda investigation.
Mr Tynan was rushed to South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel and had been in intensive care.
