President praises multicultural school on its 25th anniversary

PRESIDENT Mary McAleese has praised a leading Dublin school for embracing diversity and interculturalism.

The president visited St Kevin's Community College in Clondalkin as the secondary school celebrated 25 years.

"I would absolutely think that we are a 'new Ireland' school," the school's principal Pat Lowry told the Herald.

"About 20pc of our student population is non-national. It does come with a range of challenges but we have a strong emphasis on interculturalism here and we embrace diversity. The greatest challenge is in relation to language proficiency but again we have established a department specifically meeting the needs of international students."

President Mary McAleese visited St Kevin's and met some of its pupils to mark its many achievements in the last quarter of a century.
