Pregnant thief gets 9 months suspended
A MOTHER-TO-BE who shoplifted cosmetics has been warned she will be jailed if she re-offends in the next two years.
Repeat offender Sonia Kearns (25) was given a nine-month suspended sentence at Blanchardstown District Court.
Kearns, with an address at Pinebrook View, Clonsilla pleaded guilty to stealing €17 worth of cosmetics from Penny's, Blanchardstown on May 5 last.
Judge David McHugh suspended the sentence for two years.
The court heard she was a mother-of-one with prior theft and public order convictions.
Kearns had had problems with alcohol since her teens, her solicitor Simon Fleming said.
Mr Fleming said he was not seeking to use the defendant's pregnancy as a "get out of jail free card," but asked Judge McMugh to take it into account.
"Essentially, this is it," the judge warned. "I would not consider whatever family she has in the future to be a mitigating factor. The mitigation has been spent and she is at the end of the road.
"If she appears before me again in the next two years, it is a near certainty that she will spend nine months in prison."
