Pregnant partner left at crash as man flees
A man left his pregnant partner in a crashed car as he fled across fields after losing control while being pursued by gardaí.
The woman was taken to hospital as a precaution but is not thought to have been seriously injured in the crash. The driver was arrested a short time later and taken into custody.
Gardaí became suspicious of a car after they spotted it travelling along the N68 in Co Clare. The vehicle was driving from Kilrush towards Ennis when a garda patrol noticed the car near Lissycasey.
When gardaí turned around and proceeded after the car in an effort to stop it, the driver took off, turned off the main road and up a country road.
About 5km down that road, the driver skidded and lost control of the car on a T-junction at the bottom of a hill just after 11am on Thursday morning.
The car missed a stone bridge by inches and mounted a ditch, narrowly avoiding overturning.
The driver jumped from the disabled car and ran off across fields leaving the pregnant woman behind.
The man was arrested soon afterwards and taken to Ennis Garda Station for questioning.
The pregnant woman however she's understood to have sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Gardaí are trying to establish why the driver fled. It's understood, however, that he may have been driving without insurance.
