More than 1,650 homes were plunged into darkness last night after electricity supply was cut off by a sudden power outage.

The power loss began early in the evening as north Dublin residents reported power knocked off in Watermill Road in Raheny at around 6.15pm.

Further homes and businesses in Raheny and Kilbarrack lost power during the evening.

Outages

A large number of calls were made by anxious residents about the loss of power.

The ESB Networks' website reported outages from 7.31pm and advised customers that it was hoped power would be restored to all residents and businesses by 11.15pm last night.

However, the cable fault was identified and repaired and full supply was resumed to all customers by 8.15pm last night.

The power outage was believed to have been caused by a problem at the Howth Junction ESB site.

The company apologised to customers for the loss of supply.
