ONE of the winners of the bumper €14m Lotto jackpot is a popular Cork postman, say locals.
Pat Broderick -- a middle-aged father-of-four -- was keeping a low profile as the rumour machine went into overdrive in Kinsale as to the precise identity of the local winner.
Mr Broderick is married to Mary and has lived in Kinsale for most of his adult life. He works for An Post and is described by locals as one of the best-known individuals in the town because of his work.
Today, the Broderick family was declining to make any comment on the National Lottery win -- and friends said they are planning a few quiet days together.
Mr Broderick's only comment when asked if the news was true was a quizzical: "It could be, it could be."
Incredibly, Pat kept such a cool head about his win that he even showed up for work on Monday.
Friends said the family are still a little shocked by their good fortune. Locals said they expect that the first thing Pat will spend some of his winnings on is a holiday for his wife and children.
A keen sports fan, he was hailed today by Kinsale residents as "a stalwart of the community" and a great neighbour.
"It couldn't happen to a nicer guy -- everyone here is thrilled at the news. And at least the Lotto winner is a local," one man said last night.
"I wouldn't be surprised if Pat keeps on his job -- he is such a lovely fella that I'd say he's miss the contact he has with people around Kinsale through his work," he added.
The winning ticket was one of two with the correct numbers for Saturday night's €14m jackpot -- the other was bought in Cavan.email@example.com
