Posh background of suspect held in cartel murder plot probe
A senior member of the Kinahan cartel has been arrested in relation to a sinister gangland conspiracy to murder rival Hutch criminal Gary Hanley.
Armed gardai swooped on the 40-year-old gang member - whose family home is in one of Dublin's poshest suburbs - as well as a young "lackey" from the Pearse Street area of the city in a top secret operation.
Both suspects were being held last night at Irishtown Garda Station, suspected of involvement in a surveillance aspect of the botched murder plot.
The Blackrock family home of the criminal has been under surveillance by specialist gardai for months and he became a person of interest in one of the biggest surveillance operations ever carried out by gardai.
The latest arrests in the long- running probe took place at a building site and a property in Dublin, and add up to six people now arrested for the conspiracy to murder Hutch-linked mobster Hanley.
They are being questioned by officers from the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (DOCB) about a foiled attempt on the life of career criminal Hanley on the night of November 6, 2017, over which four other men have previously been arrested.
Hanley (29) remains one of the key targets for the Kinahan cartel and the threat level against him remains "extremely grave", according to senior sources following the murder of close associate Jason 'Buda' Molyneux last month - the 15th in the deadly Hutch/Kinahan feud.
The Blackrock-based thug in custody at Irishtown last night is suspected of recruiting the younger man for the "murder job" that was busted by specialist gardai in the Marino area of the capital's Northside more than three months ago.
Gardai said at the time they expected more arrests in the case, which they believe was organised by the Kinahan cartel.
Since then there have been three murders in the deadly feud - all the victims having links to the Hutch mob.
The intended target of November's alleged hit, Gary Hanley, was photographed carrying the coffin of his close associate 'Buda' earlier this month, but attempted to hide his face on the day.
He has been warned several times his life is under threat and was "especially upset and angry" over the murder of his pal 'Buda', currently the subject of a major investigation.
