Portugal's s1bn loan

PORTUGAL'S government has opted to borrow €1bn in bond auctions in an attempt to avoid the bailout favoured by Greece and Ireland.

The move means the country will endure surging interest costs as it sold 5.45pc bonds due September 2013 at an average yield of 5.993pc.

Hopes are now fading of an EU deal to end the crisis.
