Plans for Ikea on southside suffer setback
COUNCIL planners have dealt a blow to hopes for new Ikea store on Dublin's southside.
The Swedish furniture giant had been mooted as the anchor tenant in Cherrywood, which is to undergo a redevelopment.
But Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council's draft plan for the 264-hectare site specifically rules out "retail warehousing", which would preclude an Ikea store.
Ikea - which already runs a successful operation in Ballymun - has admitted examining several locations for potential new outlets.
"Ikea has been identifying sites around the country for potential stores, including the area of Cherrywood. However, we have nothing to confirm at this point," a spokesman said.
Nevertheless, the Draft Planning Scheme for Cherrywood could yet be altered following a public consultation process and input from councillors.
A footnote in chapter 2 of the draft states that "retail warehousing is not permitted anywhere in the plan area".
Dunloe Ewart - formerly controlled by construction boss Liam Carroll - is developing the south Dublin site, located between the M50 and N11 in south Dublin.
The site is the largest undeveloped land bank in the Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown area.
"In the long term, the development of the area will provide an opportunity to establish a vibrant new community in a unique location," the council has stated.
Many councillors objected to the proposals, arguing the retail park in Carrickmines was more suitable for further investment.
The council's stated aim for Cherrywood is to "underpin the creation of a living town".
The scheme proposes three new villages surrounded by residential neighbourhoods, which will be served by a town centre.
