Pining parrot looking for love after partner flew off
The owner of a pining parrot has appealed for help in finding her a new love after she got lost searching for her missing mate.
Algis Arkeys was delighted to be reunited with African grey Cona when she was found 10km from home in Navan, Co Meath.
Truck driver Algis, who lives in Macetown, believes the seven-year-old parrot went searching for her three-year-old partner Bongi, who went missing from his home during a storm more than two months ago.
Cona had been missing for more than a day when she was spotted sitting on Darren Gorman's car at his home in Johnstown, Navan.
"The kids were playing outside and saw a parrot had landed on my car," said Darren.
"I think she got a bit spooked by all the attention and flew into a neighbour's house. We managed to wrap her up in a blanket and I had an empty cage to put her in.
"I contacted gardai and the Last Hope Animal Sanctuary, who supplied a proper cage and some food and I put up a post on social media.
Algis arrived at our home after his landlord saw the post and contacted him.
"The minute Cona heard his voice she got excited," said Darren.
Algis said: "She has been pining for her partner since he went missing and pecking at her feathers. She's also started laying empty eggs, so I think she flew off trying to find him.
"I'm indebted to Darren for keeping her safe and helping me track her down.
"I think Cona is looking for another partner, so if anyone out there knows of a grey African parrot that needs a good home, please let me know."
