Phones killing digital cameras
Smartphones appear to be killing off sales of digital cameras and camcorders, even though most consumers admit that the quality of the images captured by a mobile phone is not as good.
Experts believe that the rise in social networking, with 50pc of users uploading photographs or video to the internet, is partly to blame.
"Although smartphone cameras do not typically match the quality of output of dedicated devices, the technology is consistently improving," said Samuel Gee, Mintel's technology analyst.
For photographers who take most of their photos for posting online, smartphones are seen as a more than capable replacement for the old digital camera.
