However, since the Phoenix Park tunnel is to be reopened next year, re-routing trains through Cabra, Phibsboro and Drumcondra, the Herald understands that funding is in the process of being secured for the building of the new station.

Iarnrod Eireann said that it is currently awaiting instructions from the funding agency, Dublin City Council (DCC), on how to proceed.

A spokesman for the city council told the Herald that a decision would be made on the building of the station later this year.

"A decision on the timing of the construction of this station will be taken later this year, based on funding availability, including the financial contributions made to Dublin City Council arising from planning permissions in the Pelletstown area," he said.

The design of the proposed new station is progressing despite the lack of assigned funding.

"The National Transport Authority has advised the Council that Irish Rail will advance the design work on the scheme and will prepare tender documents for its construction.

"This will position the project to be ready for construction when funding becomes available for its construction," the city council spokesman said.
