Over 1,800 for army cadetship

MORE than 1,800 people have applied for the Defence Force’s latest recruitment drive - but only one in every 43 applicants will get a place.

A total of 1,826 people had applied for this year’s annual Cadetship Competition, with salaries starting at €16,599.

Candidates could apply for any of four different positions advertised by the Defence Forces.

A breakdown shows the army was the most popular option with 997 applications received for the 20 places available.

Simon will tie knot - Amanda

Simon Cowell will tie the knot with his partner Lauren Silverman and have more children, fellow TV judge Amanda Holden said.

She said it was only a matter of time before the couple, whose son Eric was born this year, got married.

“He’s met his match in Lauren, 100pc,” Amanda told Hello! magazine.

Asked if she thought they would marry, she said: “I do. And I think they’ll have more children too, because he loves it. Simon definitely should ask Lauren to marry him. She’s such a good influence on him.”

Ten killed in Syria bombing

A car bomb struck a pro-government neighborhood in the central Syrian city of Homs, killing at least 10 people, setting cars on fire and sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky.

The blast in the Zahra district sent tremors through Homs, where rebels and the government have struck two ceasefire deals this month.

An official in the Homs governor’s office said 10 people were killed in Sunday’s explosion and more than 40 were wounded.

Oasis drummer auctions his kit

Former Oasis drummer Tony McCarroll is auctioning off the drum kit he played on the band’s debut album Definitely Maybe.

It will be offered for sale next month and is expected to fetch £15,000 (€18,500).

McCarroll, who left the band in 1995, said: “This drum kit was used by me throughout my time with Oasis, from the very beginning during rehearsals through touring and recording Definitely Maybe.”

It is going under the hammer on June 20.
