One man dead after shooting in north Dublin

A MAN was shot dead in a gangland-style hit in Drumcondra this morning.

The victim was reportedly blasted in the head and chest in Church Avenue at 11.30am.

His body was found in the front seat of a car near the Cat and Cage pub close to Upper Drumcondra Road.

Members of Dublin Fire Brigade at the scene said a man was dead in the vehicle in Church Avenue and there were several bullet holes in the windows.

A shocked local woman told the Herald she heard gunfire.

“I heard a lot of shots,” she said. “I must have heard about eight shots in all.

“I was in my kitchen and heard about eight shots. I looked out my front room window and saw guys in balaclavas and there was shooting happening.

“Immediately a car went up in flames which appeared to have crashed in the narrow area of Church Avenue.

Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was visibly shocked as he stood near where the killing took place. “This is my area, I grew up here and I am shocked by this,” he told the Herald.

“I don’t know what the shooting was about but it’s terrible that such a thing can happen in broad daylight.”

The former Fianna Fail leader said he had no idea who had been shot.“With the shooting I was intimidated and I ducked down.  I retreated to the back of my house.”

“My brother and his family live just around the corner,” he added.

A number of emergency calls were made by members of the public as the incident unfolded.

A second man was treated at the scene for shock, according to a Dublin Fire Brigade spokesman.

The investigation into the man’s death is being led by gardai based in Santry, and the garda helicopter was deployed in the aftermath of officers rushing to the scene.

The age and identity of the dead man was not known at the time of going to press.

Bullet holes were discovered in one car and a second car was found burnt-out at the scene.

The brigade also tackled a burning van beside the burnt-out car. A source said the car was not the one in which the man had been shot. Paramedics attended to two casualties while firefighters dealt with the burned out vehicles
