Olympic torch to make symbolic trip to Dublin
THE Olympic torch will burn in the heart of Dublin after a symbolic crossing over the border next June.
This is the first time the Olympic emblem has been carried here and the trip south will be its only detour outside Britain and Northern Ireland in the lead up to the start of the London 2012 games.
It is understood that its journey through the capital will include Sheriff Street, Grand Canal Dock and St Stephen's Green.
Olympic Council of Ireland president Pat Hickey says that some formalities have yet to be completed but there is overwhelming support for the cross-border event.
The torch is expected to cross the border at Newry on June 6 next year. It will be carried from the border to Dublin in eight vehicles which are part of the Olympic relay "road show". When the torch arrives in Dublin it will be taken to Olympic Council HQ in Howth and then brought to the Garden of Remembrance to begin a tour of the city.
