O'gorman bags 'businesswoman of the year'

The head of one of Ireland's most successful and iconic retail chains has been named the overall 2014 IMAGE Businesswoman of the Year.

Marian O'Gorman, chief executive of The Kilkenny Group, beat strong competition to be awarded the accolade by judges.

Now in their eighth year, the awards champion trailblazing businesswomen, their contribution to the economy and their vital role within the Irish business community at home and abroad.

Ms O'Gorman started working in retail as a teenager and expanded the Kilkenny Group during the recession - opening eight new stores between 2007 and 2013 - and today runs 13 stores nationwide.

Judge Laura George, of IMAGE Magazine, said Ms O'Gorman has built an iconic brand since she started to work with her father Christy Kelleher, founder of the Blarney Woollen Mills Group, at the age of 16.

Primark board director Breege O'Donoghue won the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award for her reputation as an accomplished businesswoman with an extensive career with formidable Irish companies.

Also honoured was Rachel Kavanagh, managing director UK & Ireland, Glossybox, who was named Young Businesswoman of the Year.
