THREE pensioners were seriously injured after they were struck by a car being pursued by gardai.

One of the victims, who is in his early 70s, is believed to have lost a leg in the horrific incident.

He was pinned underneath a Hyundai Accent which crashed into the men and two cars parked outside the pitch and putt course in Parteen, Co Clare shortly after 5pm yesterday.

Emergency services had to use special cutting equipment to free the elderly man.

The pensioners, named locally as Eric Ryan, Willie Barry and Dermot O'Brien, were returning to their cars having played pitch and putt earlier.

The Hyundai car veered across the road and crashed into them as they were standing in front of the two parked cars.

The two men travelling in the Hyundai are believed to have been involved in a number of burglaries nearby and were being pursued by a garda patrol car when the collision happened.

Both men fled the scene via the pitch and putt course but one of them was apprehended a short time later.

Searches are ongoing for the second man and gardai are still trying to establish if the car they were using was stolen.

Gardai have not confirmed the nature of the injuries the men suffered, but sources at the scene said one man lost a leg.

The two other victims, also in their 70s, were less seriously hurt and all three were taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

"We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact gardai at Henry Street Garda Station," said Supt Dan Keane.

The scene was been preserved and gardai were last night awaiting the arrival of the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) who will oversee the investigation.
