OAP killed and four in hospital after crash

An elderly woman died and four people were hospitalised following a road crash between four cars and a truck.

The woman in her 70s was removed from the accident scene in Co Roscommon to hospital in Galway where she passed away.

The crash took place in the townland of Cloonfree, Strokestown, at 1.30pm yesterday.

"A woman in her 70s, the driver of a car, was removed to University College Hospital Galway and she died later in the afternoon," a garda spokesman said.

A male passenger in her car, aged in his mid-70s, was taken to the Galway hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the truck, a man in his early 40s, who also suffered minor injuries, was taken to Sligo Hospital.

The occupants of the third vehicle, a man and woman in their 30s, were not seriously hurt. They were removed to Mullingar Hospital.

A woman driver in a fourth vehicle, aged 70, and her passenger - a 65-year-old woman - were not injured.

The woman driver of the fifth vehicle, along with her three passengers, were also unhurt.

The accident happened outside Strokestown on the Tulsk road. Diversions were in place from Tulsk village towards Boyle, Roscommon and Four Mile House.
