OAP couple murdered with axe in their home
An elderly couple have been brutally murdered with an axe in their home in Co Donegal.
Gardai found the man and woman at their home in the Inishowen town of Carndonagh early this morning.
A 42-year-old man, who is very well known to the couple, was arrested at the scene of the incident.
He is being detained at Buncrana Garda Station.
The murdered couple have been named locally as Jimmy Cuddihy, who is a retired secondary school teacher, and his wife Kathleen, who is a retired ambulance nurse. They were both aged in their 70s.
The bungalow at Buncrana Road has been sealed off by forensic investigators and State Pathologist Marie Cassidy has been called to the scene.
"This is a desperate family tragedy. Gardai are following a definite line of enquiry in this case," a source told the Herald.
"There was a huge amount of blood at the scene."
Gardai were notified of the situation at around 9am when a male relative became concerned and was forced to break into the property to discover the terrible scene.
Locals said they were shocked at the tragedy that has claimed the lives of two of the most upstanding members of the community.
"This news has shattered us all. The word only came through this morning and we don't know what the details are," said one Carndonagh shopkeeper.
"Jimmy and Kathleen are very well-known in the town and had the respect of everyone, they were very much part of the community, with Jimmy being a teacher in the local community school for many years before he retired.
"Kathleen was a nurse, and was also retired, and they were living in the Churchtown area. I hear the gardai have the house sealed off now."
"It's a terrible, terrible day," the local trader added.
It is understood that Jimmy was the president of a golf club located just a few miles from his home and had been involved with the club for many years.
The couple's murders take the total number of homicides in Ireland this year to 58.
