O2 rakes in $1m for each concert
POP stars Rihanna and George Michael were behind the O2's €36m gross return last year as it beat the likes of New York's Madison Square Garden to be the fifth best attended music arena venue in the world.
The Rude Boy singer pulled a portion of the 670,846 music fans who attended the Live Nation-operated venue in 2011.
According to Pollstar, gross receipts from gigs at the O2 in Dublin last year topped $50.7m (€36.26m) -- which was a 2pc increase compared to 2010.
Dublin's O2 staged 82 gigs last year and Pollstar states the average gross per concert was over $1m. In comparison just 616,874 attended Madison Square Garden, which was ranked in eighth position. The most popular music arena in the world was the O2 in London where 1.92m fans turned up.
The 14,500-capacity O2 in Dublin is owned by Dublin businessman Harry Crosbie and LA-based concert promoters Live Nation.
