Nurses protest pay cut plans

Lunchtime protests were due to be staged by student nurses and midwives across the country today over plans to cut their pay.

Industrial troubleshooters were also set to hear submissions against the budgetary decision to gradually reduce and phase out salaries for fourth-year trainees during nine-month ward placement.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation stressed patient care would not be affected during the demonstrations, from 12.30pm to 1.30pm in 13 hospitals.

Helena's odd Oscars fashion

Helena Bonham Carter -- noted for her eccentric outfits -- is already predicting her Oscars' night choice will be a "catastrophe".

The star, up for best supporting actress for The King's Speech, is noted for her individual, mix-and-match style which recently saw her turning up to the Golden Globes with a pair of differently coloured shoes.

Bonham Carter promised she will not be toning down her look.

"It's probably going to be a catastrophe, but I'm going to go for it," she said.
