Nurse 'was found in bed with OAP patient'
A NURSE at Rostrevor House had sexual contact with an elderly patient, a shocking report reveals.
An inquiry by the Nurses Board found that the staff member lay in bed with the vulnerable patient while both were partially undressed.
An Bord Altranais stated in a report that the elderly woman was found with her hand or hands on the genitals of the male nurse.
The staff member was also found to attend work while under the influence of alcohol.
The inquiry by the Nurses Board was the catalyst that led to HIQA launching their probe into the so-called House of Horrors in Rathgar, Dublin, the Herald can reveal.
The report was completed in December of last year but for legal reasons Rostrevor House was never identified as the nursing home in question.
On more than one occasion, the nurse in question came on duty and remained on duty under the influence of alcohol, the findings from a Fitness to Practice Committee outlined.
The allegations at the care home stem back to the period between February and July 2005.
“This information came from a secondary source and gave rise to a very high level of concern,” a representative confirmed.
“An Bord Altranais immediately took steps to contact and hold a meeting with the primary source of the information. This meeting took place on June 10, 2008.”
An Bord Altranais said that they were first informed of the allegations about a male nurse in June 2008 – which was a separate investigation to the allegations levelled against another individual named as Mr P in court documents this week.
The Nurses Board was satisified this other nurse regularly inappropriately hugged and kissed residents including one resident in particular.
This elderly client, named only as Ms. X, was the victim of several incidents of inappropriate sexual conduct by this trusted nurse, the report found.
The nurse was found guilty of professional misconduct on a number of points including having “inappropriate physical contact with Ms. X by lying in her bed with her while she was naked and inappropriate physical and/or sexual contact with Ms. X by lying in her bed with her while you were both partially undressed and her hand or hands were on your genitals.”
The decision to erase the individual's name from the Register was confirmed by the High Court on December 6, 2010.
At that stage An Bord Altranais informed An Garda Síochána and the Health Service Executive of the concerns the following day. Both the owner and the staff member of Rostrevor House were reprimanded for failing to take appropriate steps to remedy the situation and their names were struck off the register.
Sarah Lipsett, director of Rostrevor Nursing Home said that the individual never came to the FTP meeting to contest the findings and neither did the elderly woman,
“The resident asked for the family not to be informed,” she said. “Three years later it was reported.” But she said that once the nurse was found to have taken alcohol, he was instantly dismissed.
