A thug who is expected to be arrested in relation to an assault on two sisters is in trouble behind bars, despite being locked up only a fortnight ago.

Dean Fagan (25) is in a segregation unit of Cloverhill Prison after an incident in which he refused to comply with prison officers' instructions.

Fagan had expressed concern about being attacked in jail because of the publicity surrounding the assault by two men on Amy and Nicole Rice, aged 21 and 19, at an apartment in Newbridge, Co Kildare, last May 14.

"If I go to prison, and I have been to prison before, when you go to prison with a name like that it isn't a nice name to have," Fagan told 98FM in July.

However, he has not been attacked since being arrested and taken to Cloverhill on August 16 on foot of a bench warrant.

His problems relate instead to breaking prison rules.

Fagan is awaiting sentencing in an unrelated case in which he was convicted in his absence after going on the run following the Rice sisters incident.

In August last year he caused thousands of euro worth of damage to five vehicles during a high-speed garda chase, Dublin District Court heard.

Fagan, of Kildare Park, Crumlin, had pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of dangerous driving and criminal damage as well as failing to stop and uninsured driving.

That incident started in Crumlin and ended in Tallaght, where Fagan was arrested.

Fagan, who has almost 60 convictions, called 98FM to claim the assault on the sisters did not happen as it was being portrayed.

He said he had been fighting with a man the girls knew and that was why trouble broke out.

"Yeah, she got a few slaps - just a few slaps," he said, adding that he and his associate fled after the girls went public.

He went on to say he attacked the girls because they would not calm down.
