'Not seeing new hubby John is tough' - Aoibhin

Newlywed Aoibhin Garrihy is finding it difficult being away from her husband while she's filming RTE's Dancing With The Stars.

The former Fair City actress has impressed the judges and viewers alike with her moves on the dance floor and currently sits near the top of the leaderboard.

However, spending all her time rehearsing in Dublin has meant she's been away from her partner of seven years, John Burke, who lives in Clare.

"It's a contemporary marriage of sorts. We're both busy - he's in Clare and I'm in Dublin at the moment. We're not seeing as much of each other as we'd like to. It's very tough," she told the Diary.

"I'm up and down a lot, but it's a little bit more difficult at the moment. He's been amazing, and you need that understanding."

Hotelier John has been supporting Aoibhin every step of the way and has been at every show since it began.

"He drives me up and down when I'm too tired to drive myself. He's been there every week," she said.

Aoibhin has been a big hit with fans of Dancing With The Stars so far, due to her impressive performances.

"The response has been so positive. The viewing figures have been phenomenal, but you can't let that get too much in your head because that would cause a lot of nerves when you do get that response," she said.

"Even at the toll bridges, I can't go through without someone saying 'Well done last week', so that's lovely.

Crushed

"Everyone is really impressed with the production and seems to be really enjoying it."

Aoibhin is in it to win it, and the recent eliminations of Thalia Heffernan and Hughie Maughan have reminded her the show is not all fun and games.

"I'm competitive and I suppose the more time I spend in this show, the more I want to stay. It's been such a joy from start to finish," she said.

"Seeing someone go makes you realise it's not a party, it's a competition, and each week someone's dreams will be crushed and someone will have to go, so I just don't want that to be me yet.

"I'm doing all I can at the moment to try and stay there. It's taken a lot of out of me, I'm tired, I'm achy, I'm feel- ing it."

Aoibhin hasn't taught John many of her new moves as the hotelier is not too fond of dancing.

"I was doing well to get him to rehearse the night before our wedding. He's not a bad mover. He does a good robot," she said.

Aoibhin is thrilled she can eat whatever she wants while on the show due to the constant exercise.

"I'm eating carbs and all the stuff I deprived myself of when I was getting married and I can't keep the weight on," she said.
