Noirin O'Sullivan has been appointed as the new Garda Commissioner.

She is the first female Garda Commissioner.

Ms O'Sullivan was Acting Garda Commissioner since the resignation of former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan in March.

The appointment by Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald was approved by the Cabinet today.

Originally from Dublin, Commissioner O'Sullivan joined the gardai in the 1980s, working as an undercover officer. She rose through the ranks, becoming a Detective Superintendent, then a Chief Superintendent in Garda Technical Bureau.

She became an Assistant Commissioner for the Western Region, then moved to Human Resources and then Crime and Security.

Ms O'Sullivan became Deputy Commissioner in 2011, before taking over in an Acting capacity earlier this year.
