New lead in Rafferty gun murder case linked to IRA

GARDAI investigating the murder of Dublin dad Joseph Rafferty are following a new line of inquiry.

There is fresh hope of a breakthrough in the six-year-old case that has been linked to the IRA.

Mr Rafferty (29) was shot dead by a lone gunman outside his home in the Hayward apartment complex in Ongar Park in west Dublin on April 12, 2005.

Mr Rafferty's murder was immediately linked to a man believed to be a member of the IRA and Sinn Fein.

The deceased had suffered six months of taunts that the IRA would kill him because he had confronted the man after he had assaulted Mr Rafferty's sister at a party.

A full inquest into the circumstances surrounding Mr Rafferty's death has still not taken place as gardai are continuing to investigate the case.

Another attempt to hear the inquest has now been delayed again after Inspector Richard McDonald told Dublin Coroner's Court that an initial file sent to the DPP had resulted in no prosecutions but that he had since revisited the case and found a number of new lines of inquiry.

Dublin Coroner Dr Brian Farrell adjourned the inquest to May 21, next year, to allow time for further garda investigation.

Following his murder, Mr Rafferty's family embarked on a high-profile campaign to raise awareness of his death alleging that Sinn Fein members were protecting his killers.

Esther Uzell-Rafferty ran as an independent candidate in the 2007 general election in Dublin South East to call on the party's candidate, Daithi Doolan, to fully co-operate with the garda investigation into her brother's death.

At the time she told the Herald that she was sickened by what her family saw as Sinn Fein's refusal to help identify her brother's killer.

"The murderer is still walking the street. Sinn Fein have done absolutely nothing at all.

"The thing that should be first and foremost for anyone is that a murderer should be put behind bars," she said.
