New car regs up over 25pc on last year
THE number of new privately owned cars registered in the first six months of this year hit 62,280 - an increase of 25.8pc on the same period in 2013.
And the number of new private cars licensed for the first time last month alone increased by 2.9pc since June 2013.
A total of 3,390 new private cars were registered in the period, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office.
Imported private cars licensed for the first time were up 7.6pc to 4,502 for the same period, according to the figures.
In total, there were 62,280 new private cars licensed in the year to the end of June 2014, a rise of 25.8pc compared with the same period in 2013.
The corresponding figure for 2014 for used or imported private cars was 27,601 and this was up 16.5pc from 2013.
The licensing figures also showed that the number of new goods vehicles licensed in June, 2014, was 1,101, up a massive 47.8pc from June 2013.
The total number of all new vehicles licensed during June, 2014, was 5,123 compared with 4,609 during the same month in 2013 - an increase of 11.2pc.
The figures also revealed the most popular car makes last month, with Volkswagen topping the list with 515 cars registered, followed by Ford 325, Toyota 296 and Renault 249.
For the year to the end of June, 2014, Volkswagen also ranked highest with 7,558 for new private cars. This was followed by Toyota 6,775, Ford 6,133 and Hyundai 5,084.
In June, 2014, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 11,101 compared with 10,060 in the corresponding month last year - an increase of 10.3pc.
The licensing figures refer to vehicles taxed for road use only and classified by taxation class.
Licensing differs from registration in that a vehicle is licensed when a valid motor tax disc is issued for the first time.
Registration occurs when a vehicle gets its licence plate -registration number - for the first time.
Car sales are expected to rise strongly in July as new 142 number plates begin to be issued.
In May, 2014, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 16,799 compared with 14,996 in the corresponding month last year - an increase of 12pc.
