New air cargo hub at Shannon

DUBLIN Airport Authority and global air cargo company Lynxs are preparing to ink a deal leading to a €12m deal for an international air cargo hub.

The centre is planned for Shannon Airport and today's signing comes two years after the two sides entered a memorandum of understanding.

A total of 80pc of Ireland's air cargo currently travels by road overseas to foreign airports.

The announcement confirms the DAA's commitment to the project that involves the construction of a 200,000 sq ft international cargo facility at Shannon and brings the establishment of the cargo hub at Shannon much closer.

The Irish Exporters' Association said last night that the hub could lead to the generation of new value-added industry around Shannon Airport.

The Shannon Free Zone last year recorded €3bn in sales with 92pc of the goods for export markets.
