When it comes to drinking during the festive season, it seems Christmas Eve is the most popular day to visit the pub.

St Stephen's Day (43pc) - our second favourite night out - loses out despite being a huge day on the sports calendar, with racing at Leopardstown and a full football schedule across the Irish Sea.

"As our poll highlights, visiting the local pub to meet family and friends is an essential part of Christmas," said VFI chief executive Padraig Cribben.

"Socialising in the warm, convivial and safe atmosphere offered by your local publican is a great way to spend some time during the festive period."
