More grilled rat? Donal to relive Asian experience in Vietnam
Superstar chef Donal Skehan has revealed he's off to Vietnam to film a new cookery show.
The TV star will be filming the new show for the Food Network in the UK.
"I'm so excited for this trip. It combines my two loves, food and travel," he told the Herald.
It won't be his first trip to Asia and he's already tasted some of the local delicacies.
"I went backpacking there a few years ago and it was an absolutely incredible trip," he said.
"I didn't eat any insects but I did try some grilled rat. It was covered in chillies and barbecued.
"I know it sounds gross but it was absolutely delicious.
"Although afterwards we were told not to eat too much or it would make our skin itch which was pretty off-putting," he added.
Once he gets back from his travels, Donal is straight into his Kitchen Hero Live Tour.
"This will be the second year of the tour and I'm really excited about it because last year no-one really knew what it is going to be.
"It was absolutely brilliant though, we were laughing in the aisles and cooking on stages," he continued.
"Cooking on-stage and involving the audience isn't something that's happened in Ireland before.
"It's an unusual idea but it really works," he added.
The two-hour long show will be packed full of demonstrations, audience cooking competitions, food tips and new recipes.
"It's a lovely experience because not only is it a fun, interactive show but it allows people who watch the show or have bought the book to come and meet me and ask questions or have their book signed," Donal explained.
It's been a busy few months for the Howth native but he managed to squeeze in a holiday while filming in his finace Sophie's native Sweden.
"I was filming for a week and then we took two and a half weeks off to relax and enjoy ourselves.
"We brought the car over so we had our dog with us as well which was lovely.
"My parents also flew over to meet Sophie's family so it was a really lovely break," he added.
Donal and Sophie got engaged on a romantic trip to Paris last May.
The couple plan on getting married next summer and, despite both of them being so busy, Donal says the preparations are still under way.
"We're both really busy for the next few months which is great and we're still working away on the wedding preparations. We don't have much finalised yet but we'll get there," he added.
