Two of the capital’s youngest community activists, Misha (13) and Evie (10) from St Columba’s National School, have successfully lobbied Dublin City Council (DCC) to change the traffic-light system on the North Strand Road.

They contacted local politicians over their long waiting time to cross the road to their North Inner City school.

It previously took exactly two minutes and five seconds at the traffic lights.

“Our school has about 100 children and a lot of them walk to school so we kindly ask if you could change the traffic-light timing. You only have less than 30 seconds to cross the road,” read Misha’s letter to the Independent councillor Nial Ring.

The children’s petition then turned into an official motion that was put before DCC last December.

The committee requested that the Dublin city manager investigate the pedestrian light-timing on North Strand Road immediately and that it was changed to allow the boys and girls to arrive at and depart safely from school.

The council acted as soon as they received the motion and issued a report back to Misha and Evie saying that the waiting time to cross the road had been reduced.
