Melanie suspect (17) wanted for stabbing

A TEEN being questioned about the savage murder of tragic Melanie McCarthy McNamara almost killed another innocent person in a shocking knife attack, the Herald can reveal.

Sickening new details about the murder suspect (17) can be revealed for the first time.

Gardai in Co Laois want to question the "out of control" teen about a Christmas stab attack that almost resulted in his victim's death.

The Tallaght teenager, who has numerous previous convictions despite being still a juvenile, is wanted for questioning about the stabbing that happened outside an apartment in Mountmellick, Co Laois, at 8.40pm on December 23 -- less than six weeks before 16-year-old Melanie was murdered.

The shocking incident unfolded at College Avenue in the midlands town when the crazed teenager turned on an innocent man who tried to break up a fight.

It is understood the Tallaght youth was involved in a fist fight with two local Travellers when a 22-year-old Latvian man tried to break up the fight.

The teenager then turned on the Latvian and stabbed him several times with a kitchen knife.

Murder

"For a 24-hour period after the stabbing it looked like gardai would be dealing with a murder but thankfully he has pulled through," a source said.

After the knife incident, the teenager escaped from the scene in Mountmellick before gardai could question him.

It is understood he escaped from the area in a blue Nissan Almera which was being driven by a female associate.

Sources say that the teenager has "the rap sheet that you would expect from someone twice his age".

Just hours before the Mountmellick attack, the 17-year-old was released from custody after being allegedly involved in the theft of a car and robbery offences at the Kildare Village shopping outlet earlier that day.

The dangerous juvenile and his 23-year-old sidekick - Keith Hall from Tallaght - were arrested by heavily armed detectives in Athy, Co Kildare, on Thursday afternoon.

They are still being questioned today about the murder of Melanie - a killing that shocked the nation.
